The Horror
What is the Internet?
The Internet is the most horrible thing ever to exist.
According to Wikipedia, the Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that uses the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to communicate between networks and devices. It is a network of networks that comprises private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies.
That sounds innocent enough... But fucking hell, do not be fooled.
Beneath this respectable technical surface lies the greatest abomination that this planet has ever known.
On this website we shall reveal some of the problems that we all now face, and what you can do about them.
What Is The Internet Really?
The Internet is:
-
The largest machine humans have ever built
-
A machine that never turns off
-
Everything "online"
-
Everything that has "connectivity"
-
Everything on "the cloud"
-
Everything that has an IP address or domain name
-
Much larger than the visible public web
-
Everything that connects with a modem, router, wifi, broadband, all that shit
-
Basically everything on your phone or computer (offline use is possible in some cases, but extremely rare)
-
Everything that silently syncs in the background
-
Billions of devices synchronising continuously
-
Billions of human thoughts, words, pictures, and actions being observed and recorded and analysed simultaneously
-
A behind-closed-doors corporate-owned feedback loop between mass collective human behaviour, algorithmic response, money, control, and power
-
Everything that requires an account to function properly
-
Everything that asks you to “sign in” before you can use it
-
Everything that updates itself
-
Everything that sends notifications
-
Everything with a QR code
-
Something that uses as much energy and resources as entire large industrial nations, while pretending to be "green"
-
Everything on a "device"
-
Pretty much everything "digital"
The Internet is also:
-
Everything that connects you to modern society
-
Your "social" life
-
Your entertainment
-
Mapping and navigation systems
-
Banking and payments
-
Workplaces and schools
-
Government services
-
News
-
Dating
-
Shopping
-
Music
-
Hobbies and interests
-
Most conversation itself
-
What you do for money
-
What you do with your money
-
What you do in your spare time
-
What you do when you should be sleeping
-
Your own fucking identity. Not just as "authentication" but your actual identity as a living being is probably something that came from the Internet
-
Your background thoughts
-
Your dreams
-
Your goals
-
Your metrics
-
What you most long for
-
It's all there
-
On the fucking Internet
The Growth of the Internet
Below you can see the growth of the Internet from 1990 to 2026.

As you can see, in the 1990s the internet was relatively harmless. Even during the early-mid 2000s it was barely more than a flatline.
Around 2010 there was a noticeable blip, like in a sci-fi movie, where the creature emerges from the swamp, just before it rises up to take over the planet and eat all the people.
In Earth-years (as counted by modern western civilisation), 2010 is where the monster had got big enough that most people were well aware of it...
...but with
No fear.
No idea.
Like when you find and make friends with a cute little baby Godzilla,
They had no fucken idea of the devastation that was about to be unleashed.
After 2010, everything explodes.
The world we live in is completely, totally, and utterly different to the once-familiar world that people knew before 2010.
To put it into simple language, now, the world we live in is fucked.
We Are Owned
The Internet is not something that humans can turn off.
You can turn off:
-
a server
-
a company
-
a country’s network
But not the Internet as a whole.
Like ecosystems, it routes around damage.
It adapts.
Humans created the Internet, but we have lost control of it.
The Internet crossed that threshold sometime in the 2010s.
It has gotten away from us.
